COURSE DESCRIPTION – HOME ECONOMICS
The Home Economics programme at Ahantaman Girls’ Senior High School is a comprehensive course designed to equip students with practical skills, theoretical knowledge, and creative abilities for managing personal, family, and community life. The curriculum blends academic rigor with hands-on experience across five key subject areas: Food and Nutrition, Management in Living, General Knowledge in Art (GKA), Clothing and Textiles, and Biology. Together, these subjects foster a holistic understanding of home management, health, and personal development.
Key Learning Areas:
- Food & Nutrition:
Students will gain an in-depth understanding of nutrition principles, meal planning, and food preparation techniques. The subject emphasizes healthy eating habits, food safety, and meeting dietary needs across life stages. Practical cooking sessions enable students to apply their learning in real-life scenarios. - Management in Living:
This area focuses on essential life skills such as budgeting, decision-making, time and resource management, and planning for future needs. Students are trained to manage home and family life efficiently and responsibly, promoting well-being and harmony. - General Knowledge in Art (GKA):
GKA introduces students to the role of creativity and aesthetics in everyday life. Through art and design projects, students express themselves visually and develop skills that can enhance living spaces and community environments. - Clothing & Textiles:
Students are introduced to fabric science, garment construction, and clothing care. They acquire practical sewing skills, explore fashion design, and learn how to produce and maintain clothing with creativity and precision. - Biology:
The biology component supports the understanding of the human body, particularly in relation to nutrition, health, and hygiene. Students study topics such as digestion, metabolism, and general anatomy to appreciate the biological factors that influence well-being.
